the invisible, visible’
MarceL DUCHAMP
Joanne Lefson is a South African-born artist who pushes the boundaries of creative collaboration in order provoke and inspire social and environmental change. Anti-establishment in nature, she constantly questions the status quo, exploring our perception of, and relationship with, our natural environment and our responsibility to both connect and take action for a more sustainable world.
LEFSON + SWINE: Lefson is known for her unique partnership with a 500-kilogram pig ‘Pigcasso’ whom she rescued from slaughter in 2016. After teaching the pig to pick up a paintbrush, Lefson nurtured the pig’s interest to paint and developed a symbiotic collaboration between the two. As the pig picks up the brush and paints across the canvas, Lefson watches from afar and develops the artwork into a symbolic Masterpiece through various dynamic and creative techniques. Depending on what the pig is painting, Lefson moves the canvas and positions the paint pots at various heights and angles in order to direct and develop the spontaneous strokes of the pig into balance, form the composition. Lefson also selects the colours, and though the development of the works, is able to decide on the amount of colour that is deposited upon the canvas and the to a certain point, the positioning of each colour on the canvas.
Lefson is also able to stop her ‘moving paintbrush’ if she notices an interesting stroke forming – a definitive and vital aspect to the artistic development of the composition. When the strokes combine to form coherent themes or shapes recognizable to the human eye, the connection between human observer and animal resolves. This is the moment of genius. When the work transcends from ‘Abstract Expressionist’ animal art to a composition developed into a form that is recognizable to the human eye it becomes a signature Joanne Lefson original Masterpiece. Unlike any collaboration in the world, these extraordinary LEFSON + SWINE artworks are all recorded as many defy belief. Not surprisingly, this collaboration has been prominently featured on all leading media networks including BBC, SKY News, ZDF, RTL, CCTV and CNN.
While Lefson is developing further collaborations, LEFSON + SWINE aim to emphasise and focus our disconnect and discord with our planet, focusing on the ‘food’ we choose to eat and the detrimental effects that animal agriculture has on the environment and the welfare of animals. It is this connection that elevates Lefson’s art from an angry protest into something far more practical and positive. In essence, Lefson’s artistic bridge between species provides a unique platform in a world deafened with discord: the current and future collaborations challenge the individual observer to be inspired and to act for the greater good in order to inspire a more sustainable world.
Investing in Joanne Lefson’s vision transcends the concept of art for it’s own sake. Indeed, while the investment of a LEFSON + SWINE is certain to rise within its unrivalled domain, a LEFSON + SWINE is an investment into our intrinsic hope for clarity, unity and peace in a divided and disconnected world – intention towards our greatest longing for the awakening and the promise of a unified planet for the greater good.
