Longline fishing is insane: over 60 miles long with as many as 10 000 hooks. Spectacularly non-selective, it hooks up everything in its wake. Sea turtles, seals, whales, dolphins, penguins and sharks. This artworks celebrates the innocent dance of life beneath the waves: how precious, innocent and delicate it all is and begs the question: does it really stand a chance?
LEFSON: 'The pig painted the black shape that looked like a diving fish and I turned the artwork into portrait orientation so that the ‘fish’ was horizontal. I raised the canvas so that the pig’s next strokes couldn’t ‘reach and selected blue to represent the ocean tone. This remains a personal favourite for it's wonderful and youthful simplicity.'
